Hollywood Smile: Veneers or Crowns – Which One Is Right for You?

A “Hollywood smile” means bright, even, well-shaped teeth that look natural and confident. It is one of the most requested cosmetic treatments in Turkey. But behind the same name there are two very different treatments: veneers and crowns. Choosing the right one affects how much of your natural tooth is kept, how long the result lasts and how it looks. This guide compares both so you can have an informed conversation with your dentist.

What Is a Hollywood Smile?

A Hollywood smile is not a single procedure. It is a smile makeover designed around your face, lips and gum line. It usually covers the teeth that show when you smile, often 8 to 10 teeth on the upper jaw and sometimes the lower jaw too.

The treatment can include whitening, gum contouring, veneers, crowns or a combination. The goal is a smile that suits you, not a copy of someone else’s.

What Are Veneers?

Veneers are thin shells, usually of porcelain such as E-max, bonded to the front surface of the teeth. They change the colour, shape and length of the teeth.

How much tooth is removed? Usually a thin layer of enamel from the front surface, often less than a millimetre. In some cases minimal-preparation or no-preparation veneers are possible.

Best for:

  • healthy teeth with discoloration that whitening cannot fix;
  • small gaps, chips or uneven edges;
  • teeth that are slightly crooked or different in size;
  • patients who want to keep as much natural tooth as possible.

What Are Crowns?

A crown covers the whole visible part of the tooth, like a cap. Crowns for cosmetic work are usually made of zirconia or full porcelain.

How much tooth is removed? Considerably more than for a veneer, because the tooth is reduced on all sides to make space for the crown.

Best for:

  • teeth with large fillings, cracks or heavy decay;
  • teeth that have had root canal treatment;
  • severely worn or broken teeth;
  • cases where the bite needs to be rebuilt;
  • covering dental implants.

Why You Should Not Choose Crowns Only for Speed

Some clinics offer a Hollywood smile with full crowns on every visible tooth, even when the teeth are healthy. This can look attractive at first, but it removes a lot of healthy tooth structure. Over time, heavily reduced teeth are more likely to become sensitive or need root canal treatment.

A responsible plan uses the most conservative option that achieves your goal. Healthy teeth usually get veneers; damaged teeth get crowns. Many Hollywood smiles combine both.

The Hollywood Smile Process

  1. Consultation and smile design. Photos, scans and a discussion of what you want. A digital smile design shows the expected result.
  2. Mock-up. A temporary preview is placed on your teeth so you can see and approve the shape before anything is changed.
  3. Preparation. The teeth are prepared under local anaesthesia and scanned. Temporary veneers or crowns are fitted.
  4. Lab work. The final restorations are made in the dental lab, usually within a few days.
  5. Try-in and bonding. The dentist checks fit, colour and bite, then fixes the restorations permanently.

For most patients the whole process takes about 5 to 7 days, which makes it suitable for a single trip. See our guide to planning a dental trip to Istanbul.

How to Choose the Right Shade

The brightest shade is not always the best. Very white teeth can look artificial against your skin tone and the whites of your eyes. Ask your dentist to show you two or three shades during the mock-up and look at them in daylight.

Caring for Your Hollywood Smile

  • Brush twice a day with a non-abrasive toothpaste and clean between teeth.
  • Avoid biting hard objects such as ice, nuts in shells or pens.
  • Wear a night guard if you grind your teeth.
  • Limit dark drinks and smoking; porcelain resists stains, but the edges and gums do not.
  • See your dentist for a check-up and cleaning every six months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do veneers damage your teeth?
A thin layer of enamel is removed, so veneers are permanent. When planned conservatively, the tooth stays healthy underneath.

Which lasts longer, veneers or crowns?
Both can last well over ten years with good care. Lifespan depends more on hygiene, grinding and the quality of the work than on the type.

Can I whiten veneers later?
No. Porcelain does not change colour with whitening, so choose your shade carefully.

Is a Hollywood smile painful?
Preparation is done under local anaesthesia. Some temporary sensitivity is normal for a few days.
